My experience as a Combat Artist was in Vietnam in 1969-1970 when I was 21 years old. The images here are of artwork, sketches done and of photos taken by me during that time, except, of course, of maps and posters.
Throughout history, from ancient civilizations to present day, artists have depicted and documented war. The Civil War art is impressively represented by “special artists” (as they were known then), such as; Edwin Forbes, William and Alfred Waud, Henri Lovie, Winslow Homer and many more. WW II had John Singer Sargent and others.
The Marine Corps expanded its Historic Branch with the Combat Art Program in the 1960’s. Enlisted and commissioned, as well as civilian artists, participated. Marine artists were stationed at Da Nang Press Center, also known as the Combat Information Bureau, the central point for collection and dissemination of information for all major media outlets, such as BBC, AP and UPI.
Our studio was on the Song Han River. As Marine infantry, we artists were also responsible for security at the Center, including escorting journalists and press people to field locations—with a rifle in one arm and a sketch pad in the other. We worked both in a base studio and in the field.
Each month we shipped our finished work to Washington, DC for review and critique. Over 300 of my pieces are part of the archives/permanent collection, now housed at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia.
Artists were free to travel anywhere in “I Corps” (the Marine jurisdiction in country) and encouraged to explore and record artistically the distinctive qualities of landscape, events and people: mountains and jungles; firefights, fellow Marines in the field.
In 1968, the infamous Tet Offensive by the NVA and Viet Cong occurred in which thousands of civilian men, women and children were killed. While I was there, a discovery of mass burials in the Imperial City of Hue was made. I travelled with Richard Pyle, AP reporter (see photo of Richard and photos/drawings) to the site and witnessed the unearthing and identification of the victims--another sad and horrific event in the history of humanity--known as the Hue Massacre.
I met many curious, interesting and wonderful people in that year, both in the field and at the base. Of all the experiences I had in that one year, as a young man of 21, most of all, I remember the Vietnamese people I met--genuine, honest and honorable.
Drawings are mostly sketches done on the spot, or studies for paintings done later. Some are finished works not for sale or in private collections.
